Monogram Range Hoods: Widths, Styles and Airflow Faults

A hood works only if it moves the air out of the building, so weak suction is often a ducting question as much as a motor one.

At a glance

Overview

Monogram range hoods range from custom inserts hidden in cabinetry to open chimney and professional styles. They sit above gas or electric cooking and handle heat, grease and steam. When one fails, the cook sees it first through a haze, a smell or a noisy fan.

Hood models listed

  • Custom series, current: UVC9300SLSS at 30 inches, UVC9360SLSS at 36 inches, UVC9420SLSS at 42 inches and UVC9480SLSS at 48 inches.
  • Chimney, current: ZV1050SFSS at 42 inches.
  • Professional, current: ZV36RSFSS at 36 inches.

UVC and ZV are the hood prefixes. We do not list blower capacities or duct sizes.

Finding the model label

The label is usually inside the hood, on a wall of the canopy under the filters, or behind a removable filter. Take the filter out by hand and look at the edge.

Common complaints

Loud fan or weak suction

A greasy filter, a squeezed duct, a damper that sticks or a blower wheel that is dirty all do this. Loud, weak airflow walks through them.

Lights work, fan does not

The control may be fine while the fan motor, a capacitor or a connection fails. See lights work but the fan does not.

Turns on by itself

Some hoods respond to heat sensors, or a control can stick. Range hood turns on by itself covers the causes.

Grease dripping

A clogged filter or a full grease channel can leave drops on the cooktop. Clean the filter often.

Codes

Hoods in this line have no published code list we rely on. Write down any light pattern and the time. The error code hub lists related families.

Installation details

A hood needs a straight, clear duct to the outside and a make-up air path. Tall San Francisco buildings often run long ducts with several turns, and a custom insert can sit behind a cabinet face that limits access. Gas cooking underneath needs the hood to clear heat and combustion byproducts, so a weak hood matters for more than comfort. See Monogram rangetops and Monogram ranges.

Safe checks

  1. Check the breaker and that the control responds at every speed.
  2. Remove and wash the grease filters, and dry them fully.
  3. Look at the outside vent flap, if reachable, to see it opens.
  4. Open a window slightly to test whether the air path is starved.
  5. Write down what the hood does and when.

Do not open the blower housing or climb on the cooktop. If you smell burning, switch off the breaker.

Keeping the hood effective

Grease filters are the front line. Wash them often, let them dry completely and put them back facing the right way. A filter that is clogged forces the blower to pull harder and reduces airflow, while a filter that is missing lets grease reach the blower wheel.

Turn the hood on before you start cooking and leave it running a little after you finish, so steam and grease clear the cooktop area. Use a lower speed for light cooking and a higher one for searing. If the hood vents outdoors, check the exterior cap now and then for debris or a stuck flap.

When the hood is hidden

Custom inserts sit behind a cabinet face, and that can make access difficult. If a light bulb or a filter is hard to reach, do not climb on the cooktop. Describe the style and the width, and tell us whether the hood vents outside or recirculates. A photo of the canopy with the filters removed is very useful.

Cooking with gas underneath

Gas burners produce moisture and combustion byproducts that a good hood carries away. If windows fog or you notice odors lingering after you cook, note it and mention it when you book. Also mention any rattle, hum or change in sound when you move between speeds, since a blower wheel that has gone out of balance often announces itself that way.
